The French choreographer Leïla Ka has landed a coup with her first group piece: Maldonne has been presented on stages all over Europe and can now be seen in Austria for the first time at SOMMERSZENE.
Five female dancers perform in forty different dresses – evening dresses, wedding dresses, nighties, casual dresses and ballgowns. Sequined, long, puffy, fitted and oversized. Dresses that fly, that shine, that burst, that spin, that trail on the ground or fall. In Maldonne, Leïla Ka explores womanhood through bodies grappling with dresses that dazzle, stifle or rebel. Maldonne is a political piece about bodies and struggles of self-assertion, self-presentation and self-revelation. At the same time, with its impressive choric structure and intense movement the work explores the fragilities, rebellion and multiple identities that co-exist within femininity.
Having created choreography for Beyoncé, the César Awards ceremony, Zaho de Sagazan, and the National Ballet of Chile, Leïla Ka has drawn on her Urban Dance roots to create a precise and powerfully expressive dance language.

“Her success is relayed by phenomenal tours: she is the most present young choreographer currently on the bill with around a hundred dates annually.“
