For over 50 years the independent cultural organization SZENE Salzburg has had a significant artistic influence, presenting art that breaks boundaries and creates innovative formats in the city of Salzburg. SZENE Salzburg moved to the former Stadtkino on Anton-Neumayr-Platz in the heart of the old quarter in 1986. Since it has been based there its work has been focussed on four key areas:
The annual Sommerszene festival is a platform for contemporary performing arts that brings outstanding international and national artists working in the fields of performance, dance, theatre, visual arts and music to Salzburg. The invited projects use a wide range of forms and stages to examine new issues relating to socio-political topics and social processes and initiate socio-political debate.
The multi-functional performance space offers a diverse range of over 120 events a year representing all artistic disciplines with a combined audience of over 120,000 people. Its heterogeneous programme consists of dance, theatre, lectures, readings, concerts, cabaret, comedy, children’s and young people’s theatre, club formats and dance evenings. It regularly collaborates with other organizations including the Salzburg Festival, Rockhouse Salzburg, ARGEkultur, the Mozarteum Foundation, SEAD, the tanz_house association, Altstadt Marketing, Jazz & The City, the Literaturfest and many others. The current programme can be found here.
On a local level SZENE Salzburg supports the creative processes of regional artists by offering rehearsal and production opportunities. Independent artists are able to use a Studio on the building’s third floor free of charge which can also be used to present public showings.
On an international level SZENE Salzburg founded the European network apap – advancing performing arts project – in 2000 and since 2012 has hosted the Performing New Europe festival which is held biennially in January to highlight the work of artists participating in the network. In association with ten other European partners and a special satellite project with Maqamat/Beit El Raqs from Lebanon, SZENE Salzburg will deliver the current programme Performing Europe 2020 from 2016 to 2020.
SZENE’s integrated restaurant is also one of the city’s favourite places to meet.
