The Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues and her Companhia de Danças make their first appearance at Sommerszene with her internationally acclaimed group piece Fúria. Fúria is a paean to life: a wild, rough, breathtaking celebration of human existence. Scraps of material, torn plastic, slashed mattresses and all kinds of garbage are assembled on the stage and slowly and laboriously figures emerge. Nine dancers form a grotesque procession. This moving parade is accompanied by hoarse songs and a hard beat that drives the piece relentlessly on to the very end.
Lia Rodrigues stages the evening as a never-ending display of power and violence: themes that have become even more topical in her native country since the extreme right-wing Jair Bolsonaro was elected President. Fúria becomes a vast tableau vivant of a damaged humanity, marked by archaic force and post-apocalyptic destruction a magnificent dance on the precipice.
Lia Rodrigues has been viewed as one of Brazil’s most important artistic voices for many years. After studying Classical Ballet and History in São Paulo, she founded the Companhia de Danças in Rio de Janeiro in 1990. She was also active in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, initiating the Centro de Artes da Maré in 2009 and the dance school Escola Livre de Danças da Maré in 2011. She has toured the world with her works, appearing at the most prestigious festivals and theatres including the Festival d’Automne in Paris, Zürcher Theaterspektakel, and the Wiener Festwochen.
