Following their successful performance T-shirt conversations, shown as part of Sommerszene 2022 and the Feminist Futures Festival, buren are now returning to Salzburg with their newest work.
In shoe/farm – prelude buren continue their exploration of social roles and power relations. They start from the places where they grew up: a farm in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and a shoe shop along the Belgian coast. In glass slippers and sturdy boots, buren saunter and strut across the playing field, as if on a catwalk. They hoist themselves in ropes, ripped and turned inside-out jeans and delicate lace curtains. On the farm, their worn-out work trousers are a sign of hard labour. In the city, they are a fashion statement. They stand in their ancestors’ shoes drawing on their own experiences and imagination as “daughters of”. Linked to broader social issues concerning production processes, working conditions and consumerism, they search what connects the three worlds: the shoe shop, the farm and the artistry.
buren is a collective founded by Oshin Albrecht and Melissa Mabesoone in 2012. Their work has a strong visual character with specific attention to humour, the musicality of text and sound as a means of communication. A critical playing field with a dream-like dramaturgy.
