The Inner Shadow That Writes
A performance by Wajdi Mouawad

Ahead of the performance of Krzysztof Warlikowski’s production of Europa, the author Wajdi Mouawad presents a performance that explores the themes of the play and his own writing.

Drawing on his lectures at the Collège de France in Paris, Wajdi Mouawad reflects on writing as a means of engaging with history, tragedy and the violence of our times. In 2024/25, Wajdi Mouawad was a visiting professor at the Collège de France, holding the annual chair L’invention de l’Europe par les langues et les cultures (The Invention of Europe through Languages and Cultures), as part of a collaboration with the French Ministry of Culture. Oscillating between literature, philosophy and personal testimony, he explores what it means to see, to encounter one another, to love and to write – in a Europe shaped by memories and conflicts.

This performance is less an introduction or explanation of the play than an encounter with the ideas that underpin Mouawad’s writing. The performance is in close dialogue with Krzysztof Warlikowski’s production of Europa.

Note for the audience:
The prologue involves an actual blood draw and the visible handling of real blood. Those who are sensitive to medical procedures, blood or related depictions are advised not to attend the prologue and to join the performance only for the main show of Europa.
