Portuguese artist Marco da Silva Ferreira is one of the most incisive choreographers of the present day. In 2024 he opened SOMMERSZENE with his brilliant piece Carcaça. This year he returns to the festival with the Austrian premiere of F*cking Future. This is a piece that revolves around topical themes such as willingness to use violence, masculinity and militarisation, along with the complex interactions between patriarchal systems, collective affects and physical discipline.
On a stage open from all four sides, a choreographic march unfolds between revolution and resistance. Eight dancers move in pulsating rhythms, striding, strolling, stamping – always going forwards, always in a formation that leaves space for individual variations. Shiny trousers, chainmail tops and shimmering light reinforce the ambivalent aesthetic of a collective body that oscillates between euphoria and menace.
F*cking Future raises questions about the power of crowds, about conformism and protest – and about the future that we will create or destroy together. Its message is unmistakable: we remain here, resisting through movement.
