anne juren with annie dorsen – magical

monday 11.7. and tuesday 12.7., 9 pm,republic

can revue be an appropriate form in which to work with feminist themes? can a striptease really be used to question the voyeuristic view of the female body? are magic and circus tricks adequate for the construction of a gender performance? the austro-french performer anne juren and the american director annie dorsen answer these questions in a piece laden with illusions. they cite, frankly and freely, iconic works of feminist conceptual art; pieces by martha roslers, valie export, and yoko ono are referenced and applied to this new work. courageously naked, anne juren shows her body as she alternates ironically between moments of erotic tension and feminist critique. the magic trick is that her body, with its wonderful puzzles and challenging poses, becomes a weapon against the consuming looks of the men who watch her. the piece is a fresh, shameless new start for contemporary feminist art.
