szene salzburg started as a platform for local artists for contemporary performing arts and music. salzburg being famous for its traditional culture and music, the szene grew to be the contemporary counter weight to this historical reputation. today the szene is widely recognized for its international programs, mainly new forms of dance, theatre, and special music events. the szene also functions as an international producer and offers residencies to foreign artists. szene has founded the european network apap (advancing performing arts project) to support young performing artists. szene is running a 600 seats theatre in the center of salzburg and programs the annual contemporary dance/theatre-festival sommerszene, „austrians unique festival with curatorian competence“(frankfurter rundschau) in june/july.
